The funeral of Pope John Paul II was held on April 8th 2005 six days after his death on April 2nd. During that time the population of Rome swelled so much that it was difficult to get around the city. The underground Metro trains, always packed out, groaned and creaked under the weight of so many extra people who had come to Rome and The Vatican to pay their last respects to the Pope around the time of his funeral.
Rome is normally a chaotic city but for those days, the people of Rome seemed to pull together to just “get it right” and the organization seemed flawless. This photo gallery captures some of the emotions, I hope, that settled over Rome and The Vatican in those few days.
